Copyright Janet Groene 2026

Unlike most recipes in this blog, this one requires cooking. It also needs to be eaten or kept cool after thawing. It's ideal for a day hike.

Turkey Dinner Gorp

One or two of these savory muffins add up to a substantial meal on the trail. Keep a batch in the freezer and thaw only enough for the day.

2 cups flour

2 tablespoons sugar

½ teaspoon each salt and poultry seasoning

1 egg

1 cup each turkey gravy and minced, cooked turkey

3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter

Optional: whole berry cranberry sauce

Prepare 12 muffin cups. Preheat the oven to 400 F.

Whisk dry ingredients in a bowl or bag. Whisk egg, oil and gravy in a bowl. Add wet ingredients and mix just until everything is evenly moist, Fold in turkey.

Put some batter in each muffin cup. Carefully add 1/2 teaspoon of cranberry sauce if using. Top with remaining batter. Cups should be 2/3 full. Bake 16-18 minutes until they test done with a toothpick. Cool, wrap and freeze. Eat or refrigerate after thawing.
